While they look similar and both measure current, they serve fundamentally different protection functions. Choosing the wrong one can leave your system vulnerable to ground faults or nuisance tripping.

What Is a CT (Current Transformer)?

A current transformer (CT) measures the magnitude of AC current flowing through a conductor. It steps down high primary currents to a standardized secondary output — typically 5A or 1A — which is then fed to protection relays, meters, or monitoring equipment.

  • Measures phase current (line current)
  • Used for overcurrent, short-circuit, and overload protection
  • Also used for energy metering and power monitoring
  • Accuracy classes: 0.2, 0.5, 1, 3, 5 (metering); 5P, 10P (protection)
  • Standards: IEC 61869-2 / GB 1208

What Is a ZCT (Zero-Sequence Current Transformer)?

A zero-sequence current transformer (ZCT) — also called a core balance CT or residual CT — detects ground fault (earth fault) current by measuring the vector sum of all phase currents passing through it.

In a healthy system, the sum of three-phase currents is zero. When a ground fault occurs, a residual current flows, and the ZCT detects this imbalance.

Key characteristics:

  • Detects ground fault / earth leakage current only
  • All phase conductors (and neutral, in 4-wire systems) pass through the ZCT core together
  • Output is proportional to the residual (zero-sequence) current
  • Extremely sensitive — can detect fault currents as low as a few milliamps
  • Standards: IEC 61869-2 / GB 1208

Can You Use a CT for Ground Fault Protection?

Yes — but only with a residual connection (Holmgreen connection), where three CTs are connected in parallel and the residual output feeds a ground fault relay. This method works but is less sensitive than a dedicated ZCT, because CT measurement errors accumulate across three phases.

For sensitive earth fault protection (especially in high-resistance grounded or ungrounded systems), a dedicated ZCT is always preferred.

How to Choose: CT or ZCT?

Use a CT when you need:

  • Overcurrent or short-circuit protection
  • Motor overload protection
  • Energy metering or power monitoring
  • Input to a multifunction protection relay

Use a ZCT when you need:

  • Ground fault or earth leakage protection
  • Sensitive residual current detection
  • Compliance with earth fault protection requirements in IEC 60364 or GB 50054

Use both when you need:

  • Complete protection: overcurrent + ground fault (most industrial motor feeders and distribution circuits require both)
